A Message From Kevin Heaton
of Ashland (Neighbor of Lion Don Shaw)
Ashland Lions Club News
Tuesday, April 5, 2005
I thank the Ashland Lions Club for this opportunity for me to tell you all about
M.A.V.I.S.: www.massblindstudents.org.
M.A.V.I.S. (The Massachusetts Alliance of Visually Impaired
Students) is a non-profit organization committed to giving
visually impaired students in New England a strong network on
support and a powerful public voice on issues like textbook
accessibility and fairness in standardized testing.
MAVIS is an affiliate on the Bay
State Council on the Blind (BSCB), which is part of the American
Council of the Blind (ACB), the nation’s consumer organization of
visually impaired people, founded in 1961.
We support OurMoneyToo.org, a volunteer group working to make U.S.
paper money accessible by feel.
To learn more, please visit: www.OurMoneyToo.org. It’s Our Money
Too! Blind people use money just like everyone else, but since
American paper currency is all the same size and texture, blind
people can’t tell the bills apart independently. We all deserve
the personal security of knowing what’s in our wallets.
Blind people already have independent access to their cash in over
100 countries around the world.
Thank you again,
Kevin Heaton of Ashland, Mass.
